As I approached, I visually sighted an ME109 leaving the fight and heading straight for the GE base. I adjusted course and dove slightly in hopes of reaching him before he got to the runway. I closed to 2500 feet in a 7oclock high position, the target was approximately 4-600 feet from the GE runway. I realized I would not catch him if he didn't turn. I called on the open radio frequency "Ed break left!" and fired a half second burst over the top of the enemy aircraft. The ME109 immedeatly broke into a tight left turn, which allowed me to close and destroy the ME109 with a 4second burst of fire to the wingroot/cockpit area. Range was 500' with 30degrees left angle off from a slight dive. No deflection was used. 4% damage from flak was picked up in the tail on egress N. On egress, the enemy pilot called out "very educational!" I regret that in my haste I did not think to turn on the recorder. I claim one ME109 destroyed. |
