We try to be as objective as possible, and accurate to what we see on the battle field. The performance of each plane will be commented on, and bear in mind this is the observed performance, not book specs. ;) |
Bf109 G
A fairly lethal kite , with one 20mm cannon and two machine guns under the
bonnet. You don't see this plane much, as it is outclassed by the K model.
Bf109 K
Quite the deadly opponent. This is the only plane that can out climb your
Spit XIV. Carries two machine gun, and a whopping 30mm cannon firing through
the spinner. This aircraft has a phenominal climb rate and good speed. With
WEP, it can catch you, and depending on your E state, can out dive you initially.
Remember, 3 touches of that 30mm can ruin your whole day. This plane is
typically used in the Bounce roll, as it is not modeled well in FA in slow
speed maneuvering. It carries a good amount of armor plate as all GE fighters
do, so a keen eye is needed for a first pass kill.
Pilot comments:
"Don't trade chin shots, force the radius fight."
"The 30mm makes up for alot of deficiencies in nuggets
in the hands of an expert it can make you go to pieces."
FW190A-8
This tank has four 20mm and two machine guns. Needless to say it can be
quite serious if you're looking down the wrong end. This plane doesn't have
alot of speed, or turning ability. What it can do is barrel roll faster
than any other aircraft. It also hits hard, and having alot of armor and
radial engine, can take alot of punishment and still keep flying.
FW190D-9
The Dora is slightly faster, has better high altitude performance due to
it's liquid cooled in-line engine; however, the removal of two 20mm (leaving
2xFFMG and 2x20mmCannon) means it packs a little less punch. Having flown
this type, it offers little other than increased performance over the A-8
variant. It is also more fragile with the liquid cooled engine, a bonnet
knock will slow them down like everyone else. Both types are typically seen
used in the base attack roll by the enemy. This has led to a great stock
of scrap metal.
Pilot comments:
"Flys like a truck, takes damage like an armoured car!"
"I was right on him, then tried to follow him through a
series of barrel rolls and tossed my lunch all over the gunsight."
YAK
The Russian Yak is the best turning fighter in the arena. Going around the
block with this plane will invariable result in them getting on your six.
This is about the only thing outstanding for this fighter, the plane lacks
fire power with only 1 centrally located 20mm cannon, and two small machine
guns. It doesn't have much armor, and little ammunition. In the hands of
an expert pilot though, if you have any indecision, they will solve it for
you. It also has excellent low altitude handling and a favorite ploy of
the Ivan flyers is to fly you into the ground as they pick weeds with thier
wingtips.
Pilot comments:
"Yaks are dangerous in numbers, but singlely - well, it's
kinda like eating m&m's: one bite and they're gone."
LAVOCHKIN
The Lav fighters are the Russian's answer to the FW190 fighter. A radial
engine, lots of armor and four 20mm cannon make this an impressive plane
on paper. In the air it is rather sluggish, and is typically found attacking
enemy bases, or trying to get an unwarry pilot to go head-on with it. Bounce
this type, or get them into a turn fight and they will fall away blazing
soon enough.
P-51B
This is the allison engined version of the 'pony' and lacks high altitude
performance. With six .50cal MGs, this plane doesn't have the hitting power
to really "reach out and touch some one". Good acceleration and
maneuverability, coupled with WEP give this plane a good chance of survival
in the hands of an experienced pilot. The relatively light armor protection
and liquid cooled engine make this fighter easy prey once one or two hits
are landed.
P-51D
This is IMHO the best yank fighter, but has the same limitations of the
B model in armor and firepower. With the merlin engine, this plane is at
it's best at high altitude, also with WEP it is the only plane faster than
the SpitXIV. Currently the range offered by this aircraft is moot in FA.
Once bombers are introduced, expect to see more and more piles of "pony
poo".
Pilot comments:
"Think of mustangs as the worst combination of the GE
and SU. Lighter armor,
slower speed, and weaker guns than the GE, and wider turning than the yak."
"They do spit an impressive stream of tracers though."
P-38H
Not much different from the J variant in the game, other than this one is
polished aluminium, making it that much easier to spot.
P-38J
With four .50's and a single 20mm grouped in the nose of this plane, convergence
and range estimation are relatively small considerations in an attack. This
aircraft is rumored to be a good turn fighter. Perhaps back in 1939-40,
but it is woefully outclassed in this arena. Also known as "the love
boat" it should be noted that operational squadrons painted over the
"shoot me" lettering applied at the Lockheed factories.
Pilot comments:
"Think of the P-38 as a rifle infantry division
riding on top of a flying mobile home. A helluva lot of guns but flys (and
takes damage!) like a house. Just don't let him get behind you and you'll
probably never see him cause someone will have already shot him down."
